Derek food truck: Reviews & Ratings
Birria Definitely hit the spot after a skate at Xanadu. Got the birria combo of mulita, quesadilla, torta, and 2 tacos for $35 split for two…great deal. So much meat. The soup container was so small but to our surprise we had leftover. Still wish it was a bigger container to be able to dip. All were pretty much the same tortilla wise, except the torta with so much meat, onions, cilantro…like a Mexican French dip. Anyway, all delicious. Bonus burnt cheese on the taco. Obsessed.
Had the Al pastor torta. Came out hot and fresh. Ate it beside the truck for a music festival on the same block. I had zero expectations about the food; it was relatively inexpensive. They didn't have the meats like lengua or tripe at the time so I settled for Al pastor. It was a banger. Crispy fatty meat mixed with bits of pineapple in my torta. I'd recommend it. Good stuff.
Late night bar hopping on a random Wednesday night with friends and we got hungry. Was recommended by some people to go to this street with some food options- pizza, tacos, sandwiches, etc. Came across a Mexican food truck, but it had pictures of burgers, hotdogs, tacos, and probably ice cream too. I thought to myself, “what type of nonsense is this” plus the name was “Derek Food Truck” not “Derek’s.” Needless to say, the initial reaction was not good, but I really wanted tacos that night so I ordered. Let me tell you, Derek knows what he’s doing. Looks are deceiving. Some of the best tacos I’ve had. Not the absolute best, but top 5. Better than Los Tacos No.1. Tacos were piled high with meat and he has this guac sauce that was perfection. Also had the limes and radishes which were a good sign. The man does not sell burgers and hotdogs, so he should take it off his truck because he’s really confusing people. Would love to come again if I’m in Brooklyn, which I never am.
Delicious tacos with plenty of seating next to the truck. You can taste the freshness of the ingredients, and the portions are generous with good price. Good neighborhood staple!
Consistently amazing Mexican food. Have had their food a number of times now. The birria is incredible - SERIOUSLY. Today I also tried the enchiladas verdes. Also delicious. The chicken inside is high quality. I highly recommend.
The Suadero tacos are a must! Super tender and unlike any other tacos you've had. The birria tacos were great as well and came with consome. Excellent portions and great flavor!

Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn at 29 Wyckoff Ave, Derek Food Truck stands out as a local gem delivering authentic Mexican flavors with a modern twist. Despite its unassuming exterior and the curious menagerie of menu photos—including burgers and hotdogs, which don’t actually make an appearance in their lineup—this food truck is a testament to quality and flavor mastery. The name might sound simple, but the food tells a different story: rich, bold, and unapologetically satisfying.
The star here is undoubtedly their birria offerings. This isn’t just your average stew; it’s a hearty, succulent feast that has quickly earned a fervent following. The birria combo, featuring a mulita, quesadilla, torta, and two tacos, delivers an overflow of tender, slow-cooked meat that leaves you wanting more. The Mexican French dip-style torta, bursting with juicy meat, fresh onions, and cilantro, along with a side of intensely flavorful broth, elevates the experience to a transcendent level. While the soup container may feel a bit modest in size, the depth of flavor more than compensates, allowing for that perfect dunk of strands of tender meat and cheese.
For those seeking variety, the Al pastor torta is a revelation. Crispy, fatty pork mingled with sweet pineapple bites creates a harmony of textures and tastes that linger delightfully on the palate. There’s a streetwise charm in having a fresh, hot sandwich beside the truck, amid the hum of a Brooklyn music festival—simple, unpretentious, yet boldly satisfying.
What truly impresses is the consistency and generosity of portions across the menu. From the piled-high tacos featuring fresh, quality meats and a perfectly balanced guacamole sauce, to the enchiladas verdes filled with high-grade chicken, every dish reflects a commitment to freshness and authentic Mexican culinary traditions. Accompaniments like lime wedges and sliced radishes add a refreshing crunch and brightness that enhance the overall experience.
Derek Food Truck embodies the spirit of Brooklyn’s vibrant street food scene: approachable, flavor-forward, and deeply rooted in quality ingredients. Whether you’re a late-night wanderer craving top-tier tacos or a local looking for a reliable culinary staple, Derek’s hits the mark with every bite. This truck is not just a pit stop; it’s a destination for those who value real, soulful Mexican food crafted with care and passion.
